Kathy K. Baldwin
October 22, 1947 — January 6, 2012
Kathryn Kay "Kathy" Baldwin was born on October 22, 1947, to Leland and Arlene (Patterson) Sunderland in Atlantic, Iowa. She attended Harlan elementary school and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1966.
On January 5, 1968, she was united in marriage to David Baldwin. They had two sons: Andy and Curtis. Kathy worked as a legal secretary at an Omaha law firm and at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. She and David owned and operated the Sears store in Harlan for a number of years before she went to work at CDS. She was also a secretary at the Harlan Middle and High Schools until the mid-90's when she became an investigator for the State Public Defender’s Office in Des Moines. She transferred to the Council Bluffs office until her retirement in 2009 because of health reasons. She loved working there and helping people and making a difference in their lives.
Kathy enjoyed making different crafts, especially wreaths and decorations, reading, and designing things on the computer. She was in charge of her 45th class reunion this past year and enjoyed putting that together. She was always learning something new and had many interests.
She loved spending time with her two grandchildren but never thought she had enough time with them. She had moved back to Harlan in April of 2010 and loved living a laid back lifestyle closer to her mom and her sisters. She loved living her life and staying connected with family and friends through Facebook.
Kathy died at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Friday, January 6, 2012, having attained the age of sixty-four years, two months, and fifteen days. She was preceded in death by her father Leland Sunderland.
She is survived by her sons: Andy Baldwin and his wife Collette of Park Rapids, Minnesota and Curtis Baldwin of Harlan, Iowa; two grandchildren: Drew and Abigail, mother Arlene Sunderland of Harlan; two sisters: Pat and her husband Ron Mosher of Harlan and Judy and her husband Denny Storm of Harlan; other family members and many friends.
Pastor Donna Ewert officiated the 2:00 PM memorial service on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. Helen Warren provided music. Inurnment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
