George Keith Campbell was born on September 13, 1924 to George and Ida (Leuke) Campbell in Lincoln Township on a farm west of Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church in June of 1925 and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in April of 1948. He attended country school in Lincoln and Jackson Townships.
He was inducted into the United States Army on September 18, 1944 and served during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. He was honorably discharged on July 2, 1946.
On June 18, 1947, Keith was united in marriage to Nadine Petersen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. There were two children born to this union: Marcia and Darwin.
Keith worked for various area gas stations. He also worked for local farmers and farmed on his own for three years.
The family moved into Harlan in 1952 and he worked at Harlan Produce, Ford Garage, and drove Star Route mail for his brother, Kenneth. He started as an LP gas truck driver for Farm Service Coop. He loved his work and his customers and was always proud to know so many Shelby County families. Keith retired in 1986 and he and Nadine enjoyed traveling to forty-nine states, Maine being the one they missed. They even made it to Canada.
Keith never met a stranger. In addition to being able to talk to anyone, he had many talents, including remodeling and helping his son at his welding shop. He enjoyed motorcycles, cars, Nascar racing, and feeding the birds.
Keith died at his home on Sunday, April 6, 2014, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, six months, and twenty-four days. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Kenneth and Sheldon Campbell, sisters Phyllis Rickers and Delores Rock, and one grandchild.
He is survived by his wife of nearly sixty-seven years Nadine Campbell of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Marcia and her husband Monte Hansen of Kirkman, Iowa; son Darwin Campbell and his wife Connie of Harlan, Iowa; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers Russell Campbell of Harlan, Iowa and Victor Campbell and his wife Marie of Lady Lakes, Florida; sister-in-law Betty Campbell of Harlan, Iowa; other family members and many friends.
