Kelly Lynn Doonan was born on December 24, 1942 to Dale and Bernita (Parker) Doonan in Atlantic, Iowa. He attended Jackson No. 9 country school until eighth grade and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1961.
On March 19, 1966 he was united in marriage to Judi French at the Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan. They were blessed with two sons, Gregory and Stace.
Kelly attended one year of college at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, before returning to farm with his parents on the family farm. He retired from farming in 2012 after fifty years. During those years, he was involved with the Shelby County Extension Council, Shelby County Pork Producers, Shelby County Corn Growers, and the Shelby County Fair Board where he met and cherished lasting friendships.
He enjoyed the family fishing trips to Minnesota as a five year old and continued the tradition with his own children and grandchildren. He cherished time spent with his family and good friends. He enjoyed going to antique shops to find old fishing gear, playing cards every morning with the "Jacksonville Gang", and taking his dog Maggie on rides in the "dog truck".
Kelly died unexpectedly on Monday, June 9, 2014, having attained the age of seventy-one years, five months, and sixteen days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jay.
He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Judi Doonan of Harlan, Iowa; his sons: Gregory Doonan and his wife Stephanie of Polk City, Iowa, and Stace Doonan and his wife Emily of Collerville, Tennessee; four grandchildren: Alana, Mia, Gavin, and Hudson Doonan; mother-in-law Rosalie French of Harlan, Iowa; sister-in-law Teresa Doonan of Johnston, Iowa; brothers-in-law: John French and his wife Shelly of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Stan French and his wife Rebecca of Boise, Idaho, and Dave French and his wife Amy of LaJolla, California; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
