Kenneth Eugene Brundige was born on June 25, 1929 to Warren and Kathryn (Poynter) Brundige in Manilla, Iowa. He attended Kirkman, Manilla, and Irwin schools. He worked as a farm hand for numerous local farmers before he entered the United States Navy on December 29, 1950, serving aboard the USS Pittsburgh during the Korean War. He earned his honorable discharge on October 11, 1954 when he returned to Iowa.
On August 31, 1969, Kenneth was united in marriage to Sharon Herrick. They became parents to three children: Michael, Michelle, and Mark.
Kenneth worked at Purina, the Irwin Elevator, and John Deere. He also worked road construction with Owens Construction and was the custodian at I-K-M Schools until his retirement in 1994.
He was an active member with the Greenridge Steam and Gas Antique Club, harvesting and turning the sorghum crop into syrup at their yearly show, and was a member of the Austin Earl Hiatt American Legion Post No. 614 in Irwin. He liked to put jigsaw puzzles together, read and watch Westerns, gardening, fishing, and leather tooling.
After Sharon’s death in September of 2012, Kenneth remained in his home until a brief stay at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home for occupational and physical therapy. It was there that he died on Monday, September 14, 2015 at the age of eighty-six years, two months, and twenty days. He was preceded in death by his parents Warren and Kathryn, his wife Sharon, son Michael, brothers Donald and Robert, and sister Ina Bernard.
He is survived by his daughter Michelle Brundige and her special friend Jack de Sousa of Brooklyn, New York; son Mark Brundige and his special friend Shari Putnam of Irwin, Iowa; granddaughter Zoe de Sousa of Brooklyn, New York; sister Betty Scott of Murrieta, California; brother Ray Brundige of Manilla, Iowa; other family members and many friends.
