Kenneth Jacob Haas was born on August 8, 1917 to Gilbert and Alma (Groepper) Haas in Shelby, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Minden Congregational Church. He attended school in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School in 1935.
On March 1, 1939, he was united in marriage to Alpha Schnepel in Missouri Valley, Iowa. He farmed in the Minden area and then the Guthrie Center area until 1968. At that time, he began employment at General Electric in Carroll, Iowa. He retired in 1983 when they moved to Atlantic, Iowa.
Ken and Alpha traveled throughout the United States. He had a great sense of humor and was very witty.
He was an avid basketball fan and watched girls basketball as well as the NBA. He also loved Glenn Miller and big band dance music. Ken spent much of his time reading whatever he got his hands on. He was especially interested in westerns and mafia stories and kept reading up until his death.
Ken died on Sunday, May 9, 2010, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-two years, nine months, and one day. He is preceded in death by his parents Gilbert and Alma; his wife Alpha; three infant children; his brothers and sisters: Jerome Haas, Berdine Bond, Genevieve Scott, Douglas Haas, and Harley Haas; and his nephew Tony Bond.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews: Connie Spradley, Marlene Wallace, John Bond, Dan Bond, Carol Bond, Douglas Haas, Jr., Gilbert Haas, Jenny Stanbro, and "Chip" Haas; Alpha�s special nieces Karen Hundt, Lavon Hadfield, Joyce McKinny, and Bev Schroder; and her other nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Pastor Brian Wohlhutter officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were: Connie Spradley, Marlene Wallace, Douglas Haas, Jr., Gilbert Haas, Jenny Stanbro, Carol Bond, Dan Bond, John Bond, and Chip Haas. Serving as casket bearers were: Joyce and Rich McKinny, Lavon and Joe Hadfield, Karen and Bob Hundt, and Beverly Shroder. Interment was held at the Minden Cemetery in Minden, Iowa.
