Kenneth "Kenny" LeRoy Bauman, son of Daniel and Hazel (Brinson) Bauman, was born on April 20, 1929, in Grand Island, Nebraska. He later became a foster child in Grand Island after his parents abandoned him and his three brothers. He was raised in different foster homes and attended school in Grand Island, but was determined to find his mother and ran away to Omaha twice. The first time he was caught and returned to his foster parents but ran away again. While in Omaha, Kenny took a street car to East Omaha where he was later reunited with his mother and three brothers.
While living in Omaha, Kenny enlisted in the United States Army-Air Force and was deployed to Washington State. Kenny moved back to the Midwest after 1965 and made his home in Carson, Iowa.
On March 31, 1971, Kenny was united in marriage to Patty Martin in Papillion, Nebraska. After their wedding, Kenny and Patty made their home in Des Moines before moving back to Southwest Iowa.
Kenny was employed all of his working life spending most of his working days as a driver for several trucking companies retiring from Robert’s Dairy. He was an entrepreneur and operated a construction company and several restaurants. He and Patty had recently moved to Evergreen, Colorado, to be closer to Kenny’s daughter, Becky. While in Colorado, they worked as caretakers for a senior couple.
During his lifetime, Kenny worked incredibly hard and at the age of 79 often put in ten hour days. While in the Army-Air Force, he became a boxer and enjoyed watching boxing and other sports on television. He was a people person and enjoyed singing old gospel and country music songs. He also enjoyed visiting with people, playing pool, cards, especially pitch, bowling, and camping. He was a great cook with his specialty being breakfast. He was also an avid Nebraska football fan.
Kenny and Patty were back in Southwest Iowa to visit family when he suffered cardiac arrest and died on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty years, two months, and twenty-five days. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Dwain, Earl, and Jerry.
He is survived by his wife Patty of Evergreen, Colorado; his children: Becky Lyall of Longmont, Colorado; Lisa Harper of Pocahontas, Iowa; Janet Patrick of Springfield, Missouri; Gary Bauman and his wife Cheryl of Yankton, South Dakota; Mary Hanshaw of Marne, Iowa; and Pastor David Bauman and his wife Brandi of Harlan; sixteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 17, 2009, at Abundant Life Church in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Jeff Erlemeier officiated the 10:30 AM service. Interment was held at Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland, Iowa, with Curt Carter, Justin Hanshaw, Jesse Lyall, Joe Bauman, Dustin Hanshaw, and Tina Scanlon serving as casket bearers.
