L.S. "Ike" Eichelberger was born on July 4, 1924 to John and Elizabeth (Sachs) Eichelberger in Freeland, Pennsylvania. He attended various schools in Pennsylvania and graduated with the class of 1942 at Butler Township High School. During his teenage school years he worked with his dad at the coal mines in Pennsylvania. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Miliatry Policeman. He was a Veteran of WWII and was wounded in combat near Naples, Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1946 receiving the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, and Victory medals, EAME TH Service Medal with one Bronze Star and the American THR Service Medal.
Ike married Lorraine Cooper on May 4, 1945 in Troy, Kansas, and they were blessed with three children, John, Chris and Ellen. After his discharge they lived in Clarinda, Iowa. It was in Clarinda that Ike began working at Iowa Power and Light as a heavy line worker.
Ike transferred to Avoca, Iowa in 1955 still working for Iowa Power and Light. He went to a lot of movies and one day said to a friend "they added something new at the Avoca Movie Theater" talking about Norma Sondergard whom had returned home to Avoca and started working at the Theater. Ike and Norma married on August 25, 1955 in Avoca, Iowa. To this marriage four chldren were born: Rex, Margie, Lafe and Sally. In 1985 he retired with thirty nine years of service to Mid American Energy. He enjoyed fishing, watching the Hawkeyes and loved planting rose bushes around his home.
Ike died on January 25, 2015 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa attaining an age of ninety years, six months, and twenty-one days. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers: Frank, Bill and Marty.
He is survived by his wife of fifty nine years Norma Eichelberger of Avoca, Iowa; children - John Eichelberger of Akron, Colorado; Chris Holmes and special friend Tom Ives of Clarinda, Iowa; Ellen and her husband Larry Fritz of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Rex Eichelberger and his wife Paula of Avoca, Iowa; Margie and her husband Mike Espelund of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Lafe Eichelberger of Avoca, Iowa, and Sally and her husband Larry Obrecht of Harlan, Iowa, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends.
