Larry Allen Miller
August 14, 1943 — December 13, 2017
Larry Allen Miller, son of Leo and Margaret (Mosier) Miller, was born August 14, 1943 in Carroll, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Scranton, Iowa. He graduated from Scranton High School with the class of 1960. After graduation Larry received his degree from Northwest Missouri State, majoring in music but always keeping his passion for coaching sports close to his heart.
On June 12, 1965 Larry was united in marriage to Patricia Willison at the Scranton Methodist Church in Scranton, Iowa. The couple made their home in Harlan, Iowa where Larry worked for a short time in the sign painting business. He then became a salesman for Osh Kosh & Key Industries. After that, he took over Harlan Clothing from 1988-2012. Larry was the KNOD sports announcer for thirteen years. Fans at the Cyclones games were always informed by the play by play action of the game as well as entertained by his colorful banter and sidelines.
Larry was very involved in the Harlan Community School system. He was one of the founders of the Booster Club and the official scorekeeper for the boys and girls teams at Harlan Community High School. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan where he volunteered many hours which earned him United Methodist Youth Group Citizen of the Year. Larry was a longtime Harlan Chamber member, served as a Mason for many years, and sat as a board member for Myrtue Hospital. Larry also spent countless hours at the baseball field, coaching town team baseball.
Along with a devoted Harlan Cyclone Fan, Larry was also a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan. He also enjoyed spending time fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Most near and dear to Larry’s heart was his family and his grandchildren.
Larry passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, attaining the age of 74 years, 3 months, and 29 days. In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his son, Todd Miller.
Left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life are his wife Patricia Miller of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Kim and her husband Ron Grote of Washington, Iowa; grandchildren Megan Grote of New York, New York; Matthew Grote of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Haley Miller of Huxley, Iowa; Austin Miller of Lenox, Iowa; great-grandchildren Frankie and Charlie Miller of Huxley, Iowa; brother Charlie Miller and his wife Martha of San Diego, California; sister Mary and her husband Charlie Johnson of Mitchellville, Iowa, nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.
