Larry Allen Patten was born on January 10, 1942 to Joseph and Alma (Plambeck) Patten on the family farm near Portsmouth in Harrison County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He began his schooling at Sunnyside Country School, attended Hemlock Country School from second through seventh grades, spent eighth grade at St. Mary’s Catholic School, and attended Persia High School for the next two years.
Larry entered the United States Marine Corps on February 8, 1959. He was sent to MCRD in San Diego, California before going to Camp Pendelton. He went back to San Diego for Radio Telegraph School and then was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for recon. He spent the next thirty months in Okinawa, Japan, China, the Philippines, Borneo, Laos, Thailand, and Hawaii. He was honorably discharged on April 15, 1963 having attained the rank of Corporal.
On June 26, 1965, he was united in marriage to Judith Nelson in Rockport, Missouri. They became parents to two children: Alan and Amy Jo.
He became a lineman for Olds Construction Company out of Davenport, Iowa, upon his return from the service. He traveled all over Illinois working for them. In 1964, he became a tender for Purcell Construction Company in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area and also worked nights as a weighman at the Western Iowa Port Plant in Harlan.
In 1968, Larry started his own company, “Patten Masonry Construction” while continuing to work nights at the pork plant. Four years later, he gave up working nights and continued with Patten Masonry Construction until his retirement in 1997.
Since 2002, Larry and Judy spent winters in Tavares, Florida, which is where he died on Thursday, January 14, 2016, just four days after his seventy-fourth birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Joyce Galiher, Joann Patten, Lotus McKeighan, and Carolyn Wilson, and brothers: Duane, Dale, and Lynn.
He is survived by his wife Judy Patten of Harlan, Iowa; son Alan Patten and his wife Stacy of Oviedo, Florida; daughter Amy Jo and her husband Bruce Placke of Woodland Hills, California; two grandchildren; other family members and many friends.
