Laura A. Schmitz was born on March 22, 1915, to Henry and Mary (Kramer) Schmitz in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. She attended St. Boniface Parochial elementary and graduated from high school with the Class of 1934.
Laura served as a dedicated housekeeper and friend to Rev. Anthony W. Fischer for over fifty-seven years. They served faithfully at St. Boniface Parish in Waumandee, Wisconsin, St. Josephs Parish in Stratford, Wisconsin, and St. Annes Parish in Wausau.
Father Fischer and Laura always provided a very happy rectory. They hosted parties up north and never knew who would stop by in the evening for supper. All felt very much a part of the family as did Fathers staff. After her retirement, she lived in Tomahawk for three years and in 1976 moved to Marshfield where she continued to look after Father Fischer until his death in 1999. Laura lived alone in her home until moving into a nursing home in 2004.
Laura became a resident of Clark County Health Care Center in February of 2008 and it was there that she died on Sunday, September 25, 2011, having attained the age of ninety-six years, six months, and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her best friend and employer Father Tony Fischer, four sisters: Stella, Lillian, Eileen, and Mary Jane; and three brothers: infant Richard, LeRoy, and Virgil.
She is survived by two sisters Alice Kwapiszeski of Panama, Iowa and Naomi and her husband Marcus Gross of Harlan, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 10:30 Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 30, 2011 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Rob Schroder, Gary Anderson, Bill Wingert, Gene Gross, Terry Blum, and Pat Gross. Interment was held in the St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia.
