Laurence "Pete" Albert Sheldon
January 31, 1929 — December 20, 2014
Laurence Albert Sheldon “Pete” was born as a twin to Clarence and Myrile (Smith) Sheldon on January 31, 1929, in Torrington, Wyoming. He attended Douglas Elementary School and graduated from Converse County High School in Douglas, Wyoming with the Class of 1949.
After graduation, Pete enlisted in the United States Army, where he made a career serving his country. In 1957, he was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas where he earned Marksman, Expert Gunner and the Good Conduct Medals. He re-enlisted for another six years in 1961 in Denver, Colorado. During this term, he was appointed Permanent Sergeant of the Army of the United States, awarded with Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and when he met the love of his life.
On January 31, 1967, the day of his 38th birthday, he was united in marriage to Elaine M. Weis in Denver, Colorado. Pete continued to serve in the United States Army earning his Honorable Discharge in 1993.
After his retirement from the military, Pete worked at Harlan Municipal Utilities. He enjoyed traveling back to Wyoming. He loved to garden, tend to his flowers, and while on the farm cared for all the cats he had. He also devoted his life to his wife Elaine.
Pete died on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of eighty-five years, ten months and twenty days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons, brother Buck, his sisters Ruby, Viola, Kelly and Helen, and two half brothers.
He is survived by his wife of nearly forty-eight years Elaine Sheldon of Earling, Iowa; daughter Judy; step-daughter Patty and her husband Tom Muenchrath of Harlan, Iowa; step-grandchildren: Amy and her husband Neil Dublinske, Cindy and her husband Stephen Spady, Tommy Muenchrath and his wife Marcy, Troy Muenchrath and his wife Jill, Joey Muenchrath and his wife Heather; twelve step-great-grandchildren; his sisters Poly of Wyoming and Dorothy “Dot” of Arizona; other family and many friends.
