LaVern Eugene Holtmyer
LaVern Eugene Holtmyer, son of Vernon and Mary (Rasmussen) Holtmyer was born September 23, 1937 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
He lived on a farm in Pilot Grove Township, Montgomery County, Iowa. When approximately four years old, the old farm house burnt down due to a lightning strike and his parents lost everything.
Vern attended Pilot Grove country school for a couple of years before it was closed and then went to school in Elliott, Iowa until the family moved to Santa Barbara, California. His parents bought a hotel and they lived there during the war years of WWII, before they sold it and started managing a new motel located about two blocks from the harbor.
In 1949 Vern’s parents purchased a farm near Corning, Iowa, but lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa starting in 1950. He attended school in Council Bluffs, graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1956.
After high school, Vern enlisted into the United States Army, serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1963. Following his time in the service, he attended UNO for three years before being accepted to the Iowa State Patrol Academy. He was a patrolman for 15 years.
On February 5, 1966, Vern was united in marriage to Linda Turner (daughter of Orville and Ethel Turner of Avoca, IA) in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Lance, Larissa, and Laine.
Vern worked at Western Engineering and Cedar Valley Corp out of Waterloo, Iowa as a safety director. He fully retired in 1998, although he continued helping part time as Highway Helper Driver with the Iowa State Patrol. Vern was also a member of the Mason’s Grand Lodge of Iowa.
Vern died on Friday, February 3, 2023 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, attaining the age of eighty-five years, 4 months, and eleven days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Linda Holtmyer of Harlan, Iowa; children Lance (Heather) Holtmyer of Council Bluffs, IA; Larissa Holtmyer Jones (Dean Jones) of Ames, IA; Laine Holtmyer (Nancy Borman) of Superior, WI; grandchildren Carsen Jones, Ellian Jones, Michael Holtmyer; other family members and friends.
