LaVerne Jacob Daeges was born on August 26, 1929 to William and Rose (Stein) Daeges in rural Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, attended country school in Portsmouth and then attended St. Peter’s Catholic School in Defiance, Iowa.
LaVerne entered the United States Navy in 1948 and received his honorable discharge from service in 1950. On January 23, 1954, he was united in marriage to Colleen Schwiesow in Des Moines, Iowa. There were six children born to their union: Steve, Nick, Joe, Ron, Becky, and Bill.
He became a heavy equipment mechanic and started working for Eckerman Construction in Defiance, then worked at Owens Construction, and retired in 1997 after twenty-five years of working for Western Engineering.
LaVerne died on Friday, October 31, 2014 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-five years, two months, and five days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Nick.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years Colleen Daeges of Harlan, Iowa; children: Steve Daeges and his wife Sue of Harlan, Iowa, Joe Daeges and his wife Joy of Irwin, Iowa, Ron Daeges of Harlan, Iowa, Becky and her husband Randy Miller of Portsmouth, Iowa, and Bill Daeges and his wife Jill of Harlan, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister Marita Theulen of Defiance, Iowa; other family members and friends.
