LaVerne Orval Kock, 100, of Avoca passed away on March 12, 2023, at the Avoca Nursing Home in Avoca, Iowa.
He is the only son of Charlie and Emma (Peters) Kock, Harlan, and was born on a farm in Shelby County, Iowa, on June 6, 1922.
Growing up, he was an active member of 4-H, and was honored to show cattle at the Chicago Livestock Show in the early 1930's.
He is a graduate of Walnut High School, in Walnut, Iowa.
On September 15, 1946, LaVerne married Irma Elsie Hansen of Avoca at the English Lutheran Church in Avoca. They had four children: Larry, Connie, Kathy, and Carol.
LaVerne and Irma were hard working farmers and worked and managed a large successful farming operation in the Shelby County and Pottawattamie County areas.
LaVerne was an active board member of the English Lutheran Church in Avoca, as well as the Shelby County Extension Service in Harlan.
The Kock family were active members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, and active in community and school events in the AHSTW school district. All four children went on to school and received their college degrees.
The entire kock family were very active in Shelby County 4-H, taking on numerous leadership roles on the local and county level.
LaVerne and Irma celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 15, 2016. Irma passed away six weeks later on October 28, 2016.
LaVerne is preceded in death by his beloved parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful and loving wife, Irma; his son-in-law, Robert Tompkins; his grandson, Austin Tompkins, and his granddaughter, Jennifer Tompkins.
LaVerne is survived by his children: Larry Kock (Kathleen), Walnut, Iowa; Connie Mongan (Tod), Frisco, Texas; Kathy Tompkins, Albany, Missouri; and Carol Vinton (Steve), Glenwood, Iowa. LaVerne has 7 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 7 step-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church, Avoca, Iowa or Avoca Specialty Care of Avoca, Iowa.
