Lela G. Hanson
February 1, 1924 — July 19, 2010
Lela Grace Hanson was born on February 1, 1924, to Raymond and Mabel (Axland) Young on the family farm outside of Irwin, Iowa. She was baptized at the Church of Christ in Irwin and was an active Christian her entire life. She attended school in Irwin and was a graduate of the Irwin High School Class of 1941.
Lela was united in marriage to Fred Hanson on November 9, 1946, in Hiawatha, Kansas. They farmed in the Irwin and Harlan areas until 1971. That same year Lela began her work as a nurse�s aide at the Baptist Home in Harlan. She worked there helping others for over twenty years.
She was an avid reader and was always up to date on current events and enjoyed puzzles. She also enjoyed stimulating conversation with her family and friends.
Lela became a resident of Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, Iowa, on April 16, 2010, and it was there that she died on Monday, July 19, 2010, having attained the age of eighty-six years, five months, and eighteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brothers and sisters: Mildred Struve, Jackson Young, Donald Young, and Charlotte Doonan.
Lela is survived by her sons Steve Hanson and his wife Mary of Altoona, Iowa and Lanny Hanson and his wife Debra of Yelm, Washington; six grandchildren: Mary Grace, Hillary, Jessica, Amelia, Jacob, and Emma; her great-granddaughter Violet; other family members and many good friends whom she held dear.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa with Ted Sieck officiating. Interment was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa with Craig Struve, Connie Struve, Dean Junker, Jay Schechinger, Bruce Bruck and Pam Doonan serving as casket bearers.
