Leland Jerome Miller was born on January 28, 1927, to Nels and Mabel Nelson Miller in Harlan, Iowa. He attended the Harlan schools and graduated with the Class of 1945. He was them inducted into the United States Army. He was sent to Livorna, Italy where he was given the task of tracing the home origin of 10,000 German prisoners of war and arranging for their return home. He was honorably discharged in 1947 as a Sargent and returned home.
On August 22, 1950, Leland was united in marriage to Donna Jean Jensen. They had three children: Brenda, Kurt, and Todd.
Leland worked for Larson�s Shoe Store for one year followed by the E. M. Christensen garage in Harlan until the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1957. He worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for Courtesy Chevrolet for thirty-one years, retiring in 1992.
He was married to Dorothy (Schwarz) Peckinpaugh on March 15, 1975 in Phoenix, Arizona. They continued to make their home in Arizona.
Leland�s personal faith in Christ was important throughout his life. He loved to read God�s Word and participated in various church activities which provided opportunities to share his God-given talents and enjoy the fellowship of others.
Leland died on Monday, May 14, 2012, having attained the age of eighty-five years, three months, and sixteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant siblings Robert and Ruth; sister Elaine Nelson; and brother Gene Miller.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Miller, daughter Brenda Miller, and sons Kurt Miller and his wife Kim and Todd Miller and his wife Wendy; step-children: Bob Peckinpaugh and his wife Tina, Bill Peckinpaugh and his wife Michelle, and Tom Peckinpaugh and his wife Sharon; twenty grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother Glen Miller and his wife Edith; sister-in-law Gladys Miller and brother-in-law Vincent Nelson; other family members and friends.
Pastor Dan Hawn officiated the 11:00 AM Graveside Service on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. The colors were presented by the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150.
