Leland A. Schmitz
February 12, 1928 — July 11, 2010
Leland Adolph Schmitz was born on February 12, 1928 to Leo and Cecelia (Zimmerman) Schmitz in Westphalia, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. He graduated with the Class of 1945 from St. Boniface Catholic Schools.
On November 22, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Weihs at St. Boniface Catholic Church after becoming boyfriend and girlfriend when Leland was in the first grade and Mary in the second grade. Six children were born to this union: Randy, Annette, Neil, Nadine, Leon, and Scott.
He spent his life on the farm raising livestock, particularly diary cows. He enjoyed walking, singing, watching and attending sporting events, especially if his grandchildren were involved.
His other hobbies included playing cards and pool, attending and assisting at corn memorabilia exhibits with his son-in-law Steve and taking baseball trips with his sons. He also announced baseball games and coached the youth baseball teams. Leland liked making trips to the sale barn/stockyards and to the dog/horse races.
Leland became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in July of this year and died there on Sunday, July 11, 2010, having attained the age of eighty-two years, four months, and thirteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Leonard.
He is survived by his wife of nearly sixty years Mary Schmitz of Harlan, Iowa; his children Randy Schmitz and his wife Julie of Bettendorf, Iowa, Annette and her husband Bill Dotzler of Sioux City, Iowa, Neil Schmitz and his wife Judi of Westphalia, Iowa, Nadine and her husband Steve Kenkel of Earling, Iowa, Leon Schmitz and his wife Jan of Kansas City, Missouri, and Scott Schmitz and his wife Linda of Seattle, Washington; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sister Irene and her husband Verle Greer of Harlan; other family members and friends.
A 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. John Frost and concelebrated by Rev. John Dorton on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Justine Allen, Annamarie Dotzler, Claire Schmitz, Kyle Schmitz, Trevor Schmitz, Lincoln Allen, Alex Schmitz, Gavin Schmitz, and Jenna Hucka. Serving as casket bearers were Randy Schmitz, Zachary Schmitz, Leon Schmitz, Scott Schmitz, Neil Schmitz, and Tony Kenkel. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery.
