Leo Joseph Hahn was born on June 9, 1927 to Joseph and Dorothy (Mueller) Hahn in Rural Earling, Iowa. Leo was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, where he remained a lifelong member. He attended grade school and high school at St. Joseph’s School in Earling. He graduated in 1945. In 1950, Leo enlisted in the United States Army. He drove a fuel truck for two years and was awarded a bronze star in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1952.
Leo found the love of his life when he met Rosemary Green. They were united in marriage on October 29, 1955 in Neola, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Mary Patricia and Mike.
Leo worked for Ready-Mix in Omaha, Nebraska driving a cement truck for 8 years before he began farming. He planted row crop and raised cattle and hogs. He loved his cows. He also enjoyed gardening and spending time outdoors. He also loved to travel with Rosemary, either by car on Sundays or train to see the countryside. Most of all, Leo loved spending time with his grandsons, Joseph and James and his great-granddaughter, Marci. Leo never retired. He was always working on the farm. Him and Rosemary were faithful members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They never missed a mass.
Leo passed away on May 12, 2023 at Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan, Iowa attaining the age of ninety-five years, eleven months, and three days. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Dorothy Hahn; his wife; Rosemary Hahn; and his daughter, Mary “Patti” Hahn.
He is survived by his son Mike Hahn (Kim Clement) of Earling, Iowa; grandchildren, Joseph (Sarah) Hahn of Des Moines, Iowa, James (Kristen) Hahn of Denver, Colorado; great granddaughter, Marci Hahn of Des Moines, Iowa; siblings, Marie Ohlinger of Omaha, Nebraska, Margaret Pedeliski of Grand Forks, North Dakota, John Hahn of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Rita Hahn of Council Bluffs, Iowa; many other family members and friends.
