Leon Francis Schmidt, son of Michael and Odelia (Langenfeld) Schmidt was born on March 6, 1937 in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Portsmouth, graduating with the class of 1956. Leon entered the United States Army serving his country until his honorable discharge April of 1962.
Leon was united in marriage to Irene Munchrath. One daughter, Lisa was born to this union. The couple moved to Harlan in 1971. Irene passed away on May 12, 1972.
On June 22, 1974, Leon was united in marriage to Charlene Schwery at St. Boniface Church in Westphalia, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Jeff and Kathryn. Charlene passed away December of 1991.
Leon loved being outdoors. He spent his career working outside, playing in the dirt and working on projects for many who called for his services. He retired in 2002. He was known for always wearing his Peterbilt vest and having a pocket radio in hand. He loved to garden and people watch when he had the chance. Leon was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Harlan Volunteer Fire Department.
He was a loving father and grandfather and a good friend to many. He would always have a snack to share and send home with his grandkids, he also shared his snacks with friends at Salem Lutheran Home. Leon passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 in Elk Horn, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty-seven years, four months, and ten days. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives Irene and Charlene, sister Nola Schiltz.
He is survived by his children, Lisa (Jon) Neuenschwander of Broomfield, Colorado; Jeff (Cheryl) Schmidt of Portsmouth, Iowa; Kathryn (Michael) Loftin of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Sara (Bryan) Lauer, Ashley (Paul) Olsen, Marissa Schmidt, Derek Schmidt, Easton Loftin, and Annika Loftin; five great-grandchildren, Callie, Paxton, Selah, Luca, and Mercy; siblings, Orma Fieber of Goodwin, South Dakota; Michael "Mick" Schmidt of Harlan, Iowa; Joan Leinen of Earling, Iowa; Frances (Joseph) Bowen of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; Lu Ann Isaac of Gate City, Virginia; and Gary (Pat) Schmidt of Harlan, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
