Leon Virgil Petersen was born on April 1, 1922, to James and Anna (Hess) Petersen on a farm two and a half miles South of the church in Jacksonville, Iowa. He attended Jackson Township No. 8. Leon began helping his father on the farm after his schooling and continued his farming career while living on the family farm most of his life.
Leon met Viola Mae Sutton one night while roller skating. They were united in marriage on September 27, 1945 in Jefferson, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Kenneth, Linda, Sheryl, Rick, and Karen.
Besides the dogs that he raised, Leon had many pets including a fox, squirrel, and pigeons. He had a clock collection and was able to fix any clock that his hands touched. He also had a coin collection that he enjoyed.
Leon loved to dance, had a great sense of humor, and had completed his "bucket list". He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids and great-grandchildren.
Leon became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa in April of 2010, and it was there that he died on Friday, November 26, 2010, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, seven months, and twenty-five days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and brothers and sisters: Arnold, Earl, Elva, Lester, Gladys, and infant twin sisters.
He is survived by his children: Kenneth Petersen and his wife Mary of Boone, Iowa, Linda and her husband Norval Larson of Harlan, Iowa, Sheryl and her husband Greg Cadwell of Spencer, Iowa, Rick Petersen and his wife Nancy of Bouton, Iowa, and Karen Petersen and her special friend Jaci of Harlan; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; other family member and many friends.
Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Brandon Larson, David Sutton, Justin Petersen, Garey Knudsen, Jim Petersen, and Jim Hanson. Interment was held at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa.
