Leona Louise Baak was born June 4, 1924 to Ernst and Erma Baak in Ricketts, IA. She entered her eternal home on December 12, 2018 at the age of 94. Leona was baptized on June 16, 1924 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, R.R., Charter Oak, IA. She was confirmed there on June 20, 1937. She attended grade school in Ricketts, IA and graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1941. She took college courses in Denison offered by Iowa State Teacher’s College and she then taught in rural school Hanover No. 1. She also worked in her father’s implement and hardware store.
On February 22, 1948, Leona was united in marriage to Vernon Hollrah of Charter Oak. They made their home on the family farm near Charter Oak and were blessed with 3 children, Kent, Jane, and Dean. Leona and Vernon moved into Charter Oak in 1978.
Leona transferred her church membership to St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She was a member of the L.W.M.L. and held several offices. She also taught Sunday School, was a member of the L.L.L., was a Lamplighter, and sang in the choir. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as Chaplain for many years. She helped organize the Charter Oak Public Library and served on the first Library Board. She was a librarian for several years.
In August of 2011, she entered the Denison Care Center. She participated in and enjoyed the various activities and also served as President of the Resident Council.
Leona is survived by her children, Kent and Georgia Hollrah of Denison, Jane and Lance Lafleur of Madison, NE, and Dean and Deborah Hollrah of Danbury, CT; her grandchildren, Bethany and Mark Lawson, Rachel and Peter Beardsley, Ross and Elizabeth Lafleur, Jack and Lindsay Lafleur, Michael and Carissa Lafleur, Kaitlin and Tom Tharp, and Megan Hollrah; great-grandchildren, Madeline, Nathan, Ian, Isabella, and Theodore Lawson, Aubrey and William Lafleur, and Beatrice and Alice Lafleur; sister-in-law, Evelyn Meyer; and brother-in-law, Donald Hollrah.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, in 2004; her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Arlene Baak; and in-laws, JoAnn Hollrah, Leland Hollrah, John Mundt, Freeman Meyer, and John and Aldene Winquist.
