Leona Josephine Kaufmann,100
November 8, 1917 - June 18, 2018
Leona Josephine Kaufmann, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Petsche) Schomer, was born on November 8, 1917 in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. She attended St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia and graduated from there in 1935.
On August 10, 1939 Leona married Lawrence (Pat) Kaufmann at St. Boniface by Fr. Duren. The couple resided on a farm near Westphalia. She raised chickens on the farm while helping with dairy cows, pigs, and row crops. Every two years, Leona would get a fresh batch of two hundred chickens to raise. Twice a day, she would go out to gather eggs. She was on the farm until July of 2013.
Leona was a member of St. Boniface Rosary Society and Westphalia Sewing Circle. She was a lifelong member of St. Boniface's Parish.
Cooking and baking are a few things Leona loved to do. She enjoyed making pies and brownies for the trap shooters that would come each week to the trap range. She worked outside in her garden to raise many flowers and various fruits and vegetables for canning, cooking, and baking. She also enjoyed listening to people play the piano, making rosaries, and doing word searches. Leona and Pat would go square dancing quite often. She would also cheer on the various basketball and baseball teams Pat was on or coached. The thing Leona loved most was all of her family members, especially spending time with them.
