Leona Naslund was born on a farm in Willow Township, Monona County, Iowa, October 7, 1918, the daughter of Nicholas and Emma Christiansen Ohl. She was received into God’s Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison November 3, 1918 and confirmed in her Christian Faith there March 20, 1932. When she was a child the family moved to a farm north of Dunlap where Leona was raised, receiving her education in the Boyer Township #2 Rural School. On August 6, 1939, Leona was united in marriage with John F. Naslund at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with one son, Jackie. They made their home in the communities of Deloit, Fort Dodge, Jefferson and Dow City before returning to Denison. For 18 years, from 1962 until retiring in 1980, Leona was employed as an operator for the Denison Police and Fire Departments. She spent her retirement years in Denison moving to the Denison Care Center in October of 1999. Following retirement Leona enjoyed baby sitting, house cleaning, traveling, doing crafts, playing cards with friends and sewing her own clothing, often in her favorite color of purple. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Leona died early Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Denison Care Center in Denison. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 91 years and 10 months. Leona was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Jackie Lee Naslund. Survivors include one sister: Evelyn and husband, Wayne McMinemee of Denison, Iowa; two brothers: Maynard Ohl and wife, Adlyn of Dow City, Iowa; and Ferris Ohl and wife, Fern of Hinton, Iowa; one granddaughter: Desiree Weber of Las Vegas, Nevada; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
