Leonard Joseph Tremel

Leonard J. Tremel, son of Joseph and Anna (Kohl) Tremel, was born on April 9, 1924 at their home in Earling, Iowa. He attended country school and St. Mary’s Catholic School. On February 16, 1950 Leonard was united in marriage to Mary Pat Tierney at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap. To this union six children were born: Jean, Nancy, Kathy, Don, Deb and Sharon. Leonard and Mary Pat built their home in Earling before moving in 2000. He lived at home with his wife until May of 2018 when he moved into the Little Flower Haven. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, active in the parish council and other parish activities.

Leonard farmed and raised livestock west of Earling for many years. He retired in 1990 but continued to till the earth by turning to gardening. He also enjoyed woodworking after his retirement making beautiful oak projects and refinishing furniture. He loved spending time with his family, participating in family activities, playing cards, dancing and listening to Johnny Cash.

Leonard died surrounded by his loving family at Myrtue Medical Center on Friday, May 18, 2018 attaining the age of 94 years, 1 month and 9 days. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Ed, John, Al, Ray and Joe; sisters Leona and Mary.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years Mary Pat of Earling, Iowa; children Jean (Art) Kritenbrink of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Nancy Tremel (Dale Pedersen) of Courtney, British Columbia, Canada; Kathy (The Late Ron) Olson of Norwalk, Iowa; Don Tremel of Earling, Iowa; Deb (Tom) Henrich of Earling, Iowa; Sharon Bruck (Kelly Reynolds) of Earling, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings Helen (The Late Albert) Frederick of Earling, Iowa; Charles (Bonnie) Tremel of Omaha, Nebraska; Kenneth (Betty) Tremel of Panama, Iowa; Ralph (Elaine) Tremel of Panama, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.
