Leora Francis Hamdorf, the daughter of Jesse N. and Marie Ronnfeldt Grooms, was born on a farm near Hancock, Iowa on October 23, 1923. She attended country school near Hancock and graduated from Hancock High School in 1941.
Leora was united in marriage to Orville "Bud" Hamdorf on July 5, 1948 in Avoca, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Ruth, Terry and Rodney. After their marriage they farmed east of Avoca for five years and then south of Walnut, Iowa until 1966 when they moved to their home near the Harlan Airport. Leora contracted polio in 1952 but that did not stop her from doing some of the things she enjoyed like crocheting, crossword puzzles, being on her lap top computer and baking. She also took many trips to Branson, Missouri for a reunion of other Polio victims.
Leora died on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of eighty-three years, seven months and thirteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bud, who died in 1997, infant son Rodney and her brother, Wayne Grooms.
Leora is survived by her children: Ruth Hamdorf and Terry Hamdorf, both of Harlan, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Orlene Scott and Alta Hansen, both of Harlan, Iowa and Wilma Throener of West Point, Nebraska; brother-in-law Delner Hamdorf and his wife Beverly of Morrison, Colorado; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Wayne Paulsen as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Dale Klindt, Dwight Carroll, John Plagman, Shane Havick, Mark Sieh and Duane Johnson. Interment was held at the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca, Iowa.
