Leora Larene Kuhr Torres was born on February 3, 1916 to Fred and Ida (Sorensen) Kuhr in Walnut, Iowa. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Walnut High School in 1933. Leora met her husband, Joseph Torres, on the dance floor in Corley, Iowa and married him on October 5, 1940. They enjoyed sixty-two years of marriage until he passed away in 2002. To this union a daughter was born, Cheryl.

During her 103 years she was a homemaker, candled eggs at Swift & Co., was a nanny, worked the Coca-Cola assembly line, worked Civil Service during WWII, sold Watkins products, and was a clerk/typist at the Pottawattamie County Courthouse in Avoca until she retired in 1974.

Leora was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Avoca Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary, and Avoca Women’s Club. She and her husband enjoyed dancing for many years - celebrating their 40th, 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries with wedding dances. She also enjoyed playing the card games 500 and euchre. She continued to play euchre until she was 102. She excelled at sewing clothes for herself and her only daughter, Cheryl, and was an excellent baker of all kinds of delicious desserts and homemade breads. She was well known for baking gooseberry pies for the Trinity Lutheran Church food stand during the Pottawattamie County Fair each year.

She was kind, patient and generous to her family, who will be forever thankful for her loving presence, and was a shining example of how to grow old gracefully.

Leora passed away on April 17, 2019 at Avoca Specialty Care in Avoca, Iowa attaining the age of one hundred three years, two months and fourteen days. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; parents, Fred and Ida Kuhr; brother Vernon Kuhr and sister-in-law Opal Kuhr.
