LeRoy “Sarge” Webber was born in rural Harrison County, Iowa, May 30, 1925, the son of Roy and Bertha Kirkland Webber. Raised in Harrison County he graduated from the Modale High School with the class of 1942. A proud Veteran, LeRoy served in the United States Army during World War II from September, 1944 until November, 1946 and the Korean War from September, 1950 until September, 1951, honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. For injuries suffered in the wars he was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, one Silver Star and three Bronze Stars. In 1952, LeRoy began his 33 year career with the Iowa State Highway Patrol in Adel, IA where he met and married Shirley Dymond April 3, 1955. They made their home in Adel where their union was blessed with two sons, David and Dan. In 1966 they moved to Denison, Iowa, when LeRoy was promoted to Sergeant of Post 4 where he served the remainder of his career retiring in 1985. During his law enforcement career he served as a Hunter Education Instructor, Firearms Instructor for the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge and served on the first Post 4 Tactical Team for the Iowa State Highway Patrol. He was a member and former Elder of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison, a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa, having held all their offices and, in 1976, was a charter member and first president of the Denison Izaak Walton League. He spent many leisure hours pursuing and maintaining his many collections, and as an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. LeRoy died early Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 88 years, 11 months and 13 days. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Harvey and John Webber and two sisters: Betty McWilliams and Mary Barrett. Survivors include his wife Shirley of Denison, IA, two sons: David (Glenda) Webber Ames, IA and Dan (Roxy) Webber, Carroll, IA; three grandchildren: Kolton Webber of Dubai, Kallie Webber, Boone, IA and Keegan Webber, Carroll, IA, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2014, at the United Presbyterian Church, Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Paul Seefeldt officiating. Music for the service included a piano solo of “Amazing Grace”, Keegan Webber, Pianist and congregational hymns of “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” with Ann Voggesser serving as organist. Honorary Pallbearers were Richard Meyer, Robert Elliott, Jeff Pope, Sam Saemisch and Gordon Wiebers. Military Honors were provided by the Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard and the Iowa State Patrol Honor Guard.
