Leroy H. Zacharias
November 15, 1924 — December 25, 2010
LeRoy Henry Zacharias, son of Henry and Dora Evans Zacharias, was born on November 15, 1924, in Persia, Iowa. LeRoy helped his father farm and attended country school. He lived with his aunt and uncle during high school because it made the walk to country school easier during the winters. He graduated from Logan High School and continued farming in Persia.
LeRoy enjoyed dancing and it was at the Music Box in Omaha where he met Elizabeth Ann Brown. LeRoy and Betty were married on September 7, 1957 in Council Bluffs. They had one son, Roger. The family moved to Avoca in 1974 and LeRoy began working at FS in Avoca. Betty died on August 29, 1980 of cancer.
LeRoy married Doreen Hunt Stuhr in July of 1984. LeRoy worked at Brand Hydraulics and Medicor X-ray out of Omaha. He really enjoyed eating out at the local restaurants when Roger and his family would come to Avoca to visit him.
LeRoy died on December 25, 2010 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-six years, one month and ten days. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by both his wives, Betty and Doreen, and brothers Merne and Charles.
He is survived by his son Roger Zacharias and his wife Beth of Omaha, Nebraska; step-children Kathleen and husband Dorman Otte of West Des Moines, Iowa and Marilyn and her husband Lynn Wegehaupt of Omaha; two grandchildren: Karen and her husband Rick Arispe of Omaha and David Zacharias of Omaha; six step-grandchildren: David Otte and his wife Brooke of Omaha, Darren Otte of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dale Otte and his wife Anne of Ankeny, Iowa, Janel Wegehaupt of Omaha, Brian Wegehaupt of Omaha, and Jennifer and her husband Daniel Prugh of Gainesville, Florida; sister Delores Wilding of University Place, Washington; sisters-in-law Faye Zacharias of Springfield, Missouri and Shirley Zacharias of Littleton, Colorado; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Pastor Dennis Reich officiated the 2:00 P.M. Funeral Service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa on Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Interment was held in the Graceland Cemetery with Rick Arispe, David Zacharias, Dennis Bladt, Bob Wacker, Codi Olson and Anthony Wade serving as casket bearers.
