Leslie Herbert Blum, son of Herbert M. and Marie Ann (Wingert) Blum was born April 5, 1941, in Westphalia, Iowa. He attended St. Boniface School in Westphalia, where he graduated with the class of 1959. He entered into the United States Army, serving his country honorably until his discharge in 1964.
On October 9, 1965, Les was united in marriage to Janet Funk at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clearwater, Nebraska. To this union four children were born: Todd, Brad, Nicole, and Kelli. Les worked in construction and also farmed until retiring in 2007.
Les enjoyed riding his motorcycle, golfing, and card club. He also attended many Harlan Cyclone events. Les and Jan traveled in 48 of the 50 states. He was always busy volunteering or lending a helping hand for organizations like Habitat for Humanity, being a 4H leader, and township trustee. He was an active member of Knights of Columbus. He was also proud to say he donated over 30 gallons of blood. In 2009, Les was awarded Citizen of the Year by Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. As much as he loved helping others, he loved his family, he will be remembered as a loving husband, dad, and grandfather.
Les died on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan, attaining the age of eighty-one years, six months, and one day. He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Marie Blum.
