Lloyd Rex Petersen was born on a farm near Walnut, Iowa on December 21, 1929. He was the son of Lloyd N. and Lucille (McLuen) Petersen and was one of four children in the family. After graduating from high school, Lloyd went to work at the bank in Avoca. He lived his lifetime in the Walnut and Avoca, Iowa areas.
Lloyd was united in marriage to Gladys Mickel on October 16, 1949 at the Lutheran Church in Walnut. They were the parents of two children: Jackie and James. Lloyd served his country in the U.S. Army from February of 1952 until December of 1954 and was stationed in Korea. He then continued working in the banking industry in Avoca at what is now Midstates Bank, until his retirement in December of 1990.
Lloyd was involved with many community projects and had memberships in the Avoca Museum and Historical Society, Rotary Club and the Avoca American Legion Post #227. He served as a Boy Scout Leader and received the Silver Beaver Award. He also received an Inspirational Award in 1989 and Man of the Year Award in 1966. He was also a devoted family man and enjoyed fishing.
Lloyd died on Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa. He had attained the age of seventy-seven years, six months and ten days. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bruce.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Gladys, of Walnut, Iowa; his daughter, Jackie Riessen and her husband Dan of Avoca, Iowa; his son, James Petersen and his wife, Lori, of Gretna, Nebraska; a grandson, Trevor Riessen and his wife, Amanda, of Fremont, Nebraska; two granddaughters, Randi Riessen of Omaha, Nebraska and Catelyn Petersen of Lincoln, Nebraska; one great grandson, Alex Riessen of Fremont, Nebraska; a step-granddaughter, Anna Weigandt and a step-grandson, Jim Weigandt, both of Gretna, Nebraska and a step-great grandson, Dylan Stednitz of Fremont, Nebraska; his sister, Janice Ellison of Murrieta, California; his brother, Max Petersen and his wife Deb of Walnut, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Willa Petersen of Walnut, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 6, 2007 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. The message was given by Wayne Paulsen. Honorary Bearers were done by Orris Drake, Bob Lafrentz, Bob Allen, Bob Jensen and Bill True. Caster Bearers were Ken Woltmann, Brent Hansen, Larry Petersen, Bruce Holtz, Tom True and Dave Nieman with interment at the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa. Military Rites were given by the Fred Funston Post #227.
