Lois Weberg Buchanan was born in Denison, Iowa, July 17, 1928, the daughter of Bryan and Margaret Pearson Weberg. She was raised in Kiron where she graduated high school with the class of 1945. Lois received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1949 from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, with a major in Spanish and minor in History. On September 17, 1950, Lois was united in marriage with Charles V. (Chuck) Buchanan at the First Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa. After marriage, the couple made their first home in Jackson, Mississippi, and they returned to Kiron to raise their children on the family farm. Their union was blessed with four children: Val, Robin, Jill and Ann. While raising her family, Lois enjoyed her work serving as secretary to the Educational Department at Midwestern College in Denison. She was involved in many theatrical productions of the Midwestern Players. Lois and Chuck enjoyed dancing to live music at the area ballrooms, attended high school sporting events of their children, and followed ISU athletics. Chuck and Lois later moved to Denison and were the original co-owners of Windsong Travel in Denison and Halcyon Travel in St. Louis, Missouri. Chuck died October 3, 1981, and following his death Lois made her home in Phoenix, Arizona. Throughout her life Lois held many positions in the travel and tourism industry in Iowa and Oklahoma. After moving to Arizona, Lois was a real estate agent, a Sales Agent for Discovery Tours, and was employed by “Sky Cab”, for whom she arranged daily plane trips for clients to the Grand Canyon. Lois volunteered for the Fiesta Bowl Committee, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the Herberger Theatre. Her career allowed her to pursue her love of traveling and new experiences. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and beyond. Lois returned to Iowa in 2005 and made her home in Denison. Lois played piano and enjoyed listening to big band swing music. An avid reader, she patronized the public library for the latest mystery. Lois was a natural wordsmith: she completed the daily crossword puzzle and enjoyed word puns. In her final year, Lois became close friends with her assistant, Rita Larson, of Little Sioux, Iowa. Visits from friends and family were treasured. She deeply loved her children and her growing family, and was proud of each child’s unique gifts and talents. She also cherished her gray cat, Shadow. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Denison and the Order of Eastern Star. Lois died Friday, November 23, 2012, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, having been blessed with 84 years, 4 months and 6 days. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Bryan and Margaret Weberg and her husband, Charles V. (Chuck) Buchanan. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her four children: Val Buchanan and special friend, Janice Hulsing of Roselle, Iowa, Robin Buchanan and special friend, Bob Creasey of Denison, Iowa, Jill and husband, Ron Jahn of Denison, Iowa, and Ann and husband, Tom Hayes of Prole, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; her sister, Lynn and husband, Ron Sandquist of St. Paul, Minnesota, other relatives and friends.
