Lorene E. Mcmaster
September 18, 1924 — February 26, 2009
Lorene Elva McMaster was born on September 18, 1924 to George and Emma (Henningsen) Berge in Hancock, Iowa. She graduated from Avoca High School with the Class of 1941. Lorene was a member of the Avoca girls basketball team in 1941.
On November 26, 1946, she was united in marriage to Dean McMaster in Onawa, Iowa. After their marriage, Lorene worked at the Minden Bowling Alley. She later went on to manage the Club House at the Avoca and Oakland golf courses for many years.
Lorene was a caretaker for her mother and for any animals that came her way. She never could turn away a stray and at one time, had fifteen cats depending on her. Her constant companion was her dog, Petey. Lorene never learned to drive.
She became a resident of Oakland Manor in February of 2006 and it was there that she died on Thursday, February 26, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-four years, five months, and eight days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dean, and her sister Lilly.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, March 2, 2009 with Wayne Paulsen officiating the 10:30 AM service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa. Casket bearers were Dennis Pittmann, Allan Grooms, Wilbert Pittmann, Adam Hartman, Dennis Berge, and Dion Grooms. Interment was held at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock, Iowa.
