Loretta Mary Grote was born on February 22, 1925 to Jacob and Mary (Thomas) Daeges in Portsmouth, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Portsmouth.
On January 11, 1944, she was united in marriage to Frederick Grote. Seven children were born to this union: Jeannie, Gerald, Nancy, Constance, Mary, Mark, and Ronald.
Loretta worked at St. Mary’s Catholic School and then went to work for the Harlan Community School District. She retired in 1990 and continued living in her home after Frederick’s death in 2002.
Her hobbies included crocheting, embroidery, and baking. She also enjoyed doing word puzzles, fishing, bingo, and playing games with anyone who would play with her.
Loretta died on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-six years, five months, and twenty-six days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sons Gerald and Mark, brothers and sisters: Helena, Michael, William, Lewis, Elizabeth, Ann, Frances, Bernadine, Patrick, Pauline, and Henry, and granddaughter Stephanie.
She is survived by her children: Jeannie and her husband Daryl Jensen of Shelby, Iowa, Nancy and her husband Randy Palmer of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Constance McElderry and her fiancé R. B. Loomis of Omaha, Nebraska, Mary and her husband Eric VanCamp of Harlan, Iowa, and Ronald Grote and his wife Kim of Washington, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Janis Grote of Harlan; sister Marie Anderson of Newport Coast, California; other family members and many friends.
Rev. John Frost celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, August 22, 2011 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Kate Kohorst and Jan Rau provided the music. Serving as casket bearers were Mike Grote, Robert "Bobby" Grote, Lloyd Grote, Daniel Grote, Richard Grote, and Joseph Grote. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
