Lorna R. Wahling
April 23, 1951 — September 17, 2008
Lorna Rosene Wahling was born on April 23, 1951, to Cyrus and Arline (Jensen) Monson in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul�s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa. She attended school at Irwin-Kirkman and went on to Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, after her graduation.
She was united in marriage on March 4, 1983 to David Wahling at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, where the couple made their home.
They owned and operated two Dairy Queens, one in Shelby that they bought in 1985 and then the Harlan Dairy Queen was purchased in 2006.
Lorna was involved with her sons and loved to travel and had an appreciation for flowers. She also enjoyed spending time at Lake Okoboji and with her grandchildren. She was very active in supporting her community and was involved with various groups: Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star, Rebecca Lodge, Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, and the Iowa DQ Association. She was very active in her church and proudly served in any area she was asked.
Lorna died on Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at Lake Okoboji, having attained the age of fifty-seven years, four months, and twenty-five days. She was preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her husband David Wahling of Shelby, Iowa; her sons Matthew Sternberg and his wife Janae of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Brandon Wahling of Shelby; three grandchildren: Cheyenne, Kyle, and Luke; her sister Lana and her husband Rich Schwieso of Irwin, Iowa; her brothers Marty Monson of Lincoln, Nebraska and Jon Gans of Grand Rapids, Michigan; nieces and nephews; other family members; and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. Rev. Duane Anunson officiated the 2:00 PM service with interment at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa. Serving as honorary casket bearers were: Donna Pauley, Barb Hulsebus, Kay Benson, Paula Becker, Mase Bruck, Sheryl Holloway, Jeanie Landa, and Carol Logan. Acting as casket bearers were: Jim Zimmerman, Kenny Escher, Richard Armstrong, Ian Monson, Alex Monson, and Gene Monson.
