Lorraine N. Bral was born April 14, 1927, ninth child of loving parents Charles and Alice Kullberg Peterson. She was born on a farm north of Boyer, IA where she was received into God’s Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of baptism and confirmation at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. The family lived on farms near Kenwood, where she grew up in a happy family of 6 sisters and 4 brothers. All helped at home with various chores of gardening and canning fruits and vegetables for the winter.
Lorraine went to country school near Boyer and Kenwood and attended Denison High School for 2 years. As a young girl, she worked at Olson’s Cream Station on Saturdays grading eggs and at the old Denison Hospital for Lydia Saggau cleaning, cooking and laundry for 1 ½ years.
On July 31, 1944, Lorraine was united in marriage to James M. Bral in Carroll, IA. After James was discharged from the Navy, the couple made their home east of Deloit. Their union was blessed with two sons, James and Galen. In 1975 the couple retired and moved to their home in Denison.
After her sons went to school Lorraine worked again at Olson’s Cream Station for 13 ½ years and the hospital for 19 years in the house keeping department. The couple worked hard on the farm and enjoyed their family, many “special” friends and neighbors. Her spare time was spent helping Jim during the hunting season, fishing and later with refinishing of furniture. They were best friends and loved being with each other. One day vacations were the best so they could be home together at night. Lorraine loved her flowers and gardening where she spent extra care with canning of vegetables and entered them in the county fair during the summers, winning lots of ribbons. When her grandchildren and great grandchildren were born Lorraine started to sew quilts and crochet afghans for each of them and many more for relatives and friends. Lorraine enjoyed making quilts for World Relief and the Grain Train. She was a member of the Zion Ladies Aid and the Hospital Auxiliary.
Lorraine passed away December 19, 2017 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, IA having attained the age of 90 years, 8 months, 5 days. She had many blessings and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and loved by many. In addition to her parents, Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband; brothers: Willford, Lloyd, Edward and Charles Peterson; sisters: Clara Konrady, Gladys Riley, Mabel Riley, Elsie Luetjens, Evelyn Iversen and Ruth Quandt; brothers-in-law William Riley, George Luetjens, and Norman Quandt and daughter-in-law Cheryl Bral.
