Louis Popp was born at Carroll, Iowa, August 7, 1928, the son of Louis Adam and Blanche Robinson Popp. He was raised at Vail where he received his education being graduated from the Vail High School with the class of 1947. On December 28, 1947, Louis was united in marriage with Audrey Kathleen Ewoldt at Vail, Iowa. They made their home at Vail and their union was blessed with three children, Chad, Kimberly and Kelly. In his early years Louis was employed by local farmers and helped build the local elevator. He then was employed driving a truck for Tracy North Feed Mill. Louis then became a self-employed trucker driving for Garst and Thomas Seed in Coon Rapids and then Wilken Truck Line in Westside retiring in 2005. In his spare time Louis enjoyed meeting and visiting with people, seeing his circle of friends he worked with, working on cars, camping, vacationing in the Black Hills and most of all he cherished time spent with his family. He was a 50 year member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail where he had served as a Deacon. Other memberships he enjoyed include the Vail Volunteer Fire Department and the Diamond Lodge No. 442 A.F. & A.M., of which he was a 50 year member and had held many positions including Worshipful Master. On December 20, 2007, Louis entered the Carroll Health Center in Carroll where he had since resided. Louis died Saturday morning, January 12, 2008 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 79 years, 5 months and 5 days. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Blanche Popp, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and Alma Ewoldt, one grandson, Jason Popp and one granddaughter, Alma Popp. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of over 60 years, Audrey Popp of Vail, three children and their spouses, Chad and Carma Popp of Mitchell, South Dakota, Kimberly and Joe Reiter of Vail, and Kelly and Deanne Popp of Roland, Iowa, 14 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 15, 2007, at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Francis officiating. Music for the service included three congregational hymns, "Abide With Me", "Amazing Grace" and "On Eagles Wings" with the Rev. Glenn Rankin serving as organist. Pallbearers included Cade Iversen, Colan Reiter, Gary Popp, Adam Popp, Matt Wilken and Mike Wilken. Honorary Pallbearers were Kelsey Iversen, Anila Karunakar, Kyle Reiter, Christiana Reiter, Kaleb Reiter, Keian Reiter, Addisen Popp, Frankie Reiter, Kiwi Reiter and Breckin Reiter. Interment was at the Vail Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. Following the service the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the United Presbyterian Women. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements where at 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 14, 2008, a Masonic Service was held conducted by the Diamond Lodge No. 442, A.F.&A.M., Vail, Iowa.
