Ludwig C. Buman died of colon cancer on October 2, 2018 at his home in Harlan Iowa, surrounded by his family. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Lud demonstrated a kind and compassionate spirit each day of his 91 years.
Ludwig C. Buman was born on August 1, 1927 to Will and Sidonia (Book) Buman near Tennant, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael's Catholic Church. He worked on the family farm, until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and serving in the Korean war. Upon discharge from the army, he returned to marry his sweetheart, Alice Kenkel of Defiance, Iowa in 1952. Lud and Alice farmed north of Tennant, where their family grew to 8 children. In 1992, Lud retired from active farming and moved to Harlan, Iowa. He continued to be involved in the farming business, operating the combine for the last time during the 2017 harvest.
Being a full-time farmer and father of eight didn't leave a lot of time for hobbies. Through the years, Lud became a skilled woodworker who created extraordinary pieces for his family and his church. He also spent many hours passing this passion on to family and friends. In his later years, Lud went out to the farm nearly every day to work in his wood shop. He enjoyed playing cards, jigsaw puzzles, and going to coffee with friends. Lud generously gave his time to 4-H (Tennant Future Feeders), St. Michael's Catholic Church and Agriland FS Cooperative, where he served on the Board of Directors for 22 years. Lud also loved to travel and said that if you waited until you had the time and money to travel you would never see anything. He took his family on many vacations, with the mountains being his favorite destination.
Lud loved the land and the great outdoors, and passed on that passion to each of his children. He always had open arms and a comfortable lap for his 8 grandchildren and taught them that a quiet, thoughtful approach and a good sense of humor made many a task much easier. He also taught them the value of a good nap.
Lud is preceded in death by his father, mother, and son, Jeffrey, and his sister, Mary Ann Kenkel. Loved ones that will miss Lud until they meet again are his wife, Alice, sons William (Kathy) Buman of Harlan, IA, Robert Buman of Breda, IA, Timothy Buman of Green River, WY, Thomas (Peggy) Buman of Carroll, IA and Stanley Buman of Carroll, IA, and his daughters Diane Buman of Council Bluffs, IA and Patricia (Tim) Eshleman of Peculiar, MO and his grandchildren Jennifer Filloon, Steven Anderson, Megan Buman, Jessica Kosch, Chelsey Olsen, Amber Buman, Jacob Eshleman, Madeline Eshleman and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Noreen (Ken) Pavlik of Verdigre, NE, Raymond (Marian) Buman of Harlan, Donald (Clarice) Buman of Harlan, and Alice (Louis) Bontz of Council Bluffs.
St. Joseph, the Carpenter, will undoubtedly have a woodworking shop waiting for Lud.
Special thanks to Myrtue Medical Center Home Health and Hospice for the excellent care they provided to Lud and his family during his final weeks.
