Lula Catherine Margaret Thomsen Pingel was born to John and Emma Thomsen in Harrison County, Iowa on December 3, 1909. Lula was confirmed on May 8, 1927. She attended grade schools in Tennant, Carson, country school between Shelby and Persia, graduating from Shelby High School in 1928.

She was united in marriage to Delbert Pingel on March 20, 1937 in Camanche, Iowa. It was a double wedding ceremony with Lula’s brother, Harry Thomsen and Evelyn White, at their parent’s home. Delbert and Lula made their home on a farm northeast of Shelby until retirement in 1980 when they moved to Shelby. Delbert and Lula celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in March of 1987. She became a resident of Avoca Specialty Care at the age of 105.

Lula was a member of the Lutheran Church in Shelby where she was a Sunday School teacher and active in the ladies group. She was also a member of the Garden Club, Silver Creek Social Society and Friendship Club. Gardening, reading books, doing crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, sewing and community activities were some of her interests. Cardinals, angels, banana bars and pumpkin pie were among her favorites. She enjoyed listening to hymns and country music and always looked forward to going out to eat, playing cards and going to the casino with her friends.

“Pingel Timber” was donated to the Stone Arch Trail northeast of Shelby by Lula for the enjoyment of the community.

Lula was preceded in death by her parents - John and Emma Thomsen, 3 brothers - Arthur Thomsen, Harry Thomsen, Walter Thomsen, and her husband, Delbert Pingel. She is survived by nieces - Kathie (William, Jr. “Bill”) Barrett of Shelby, IA; Ginni (Ken) Gibson of Iowa City, IA; Artie Seeser of Clinton, IA; Kay (Richard “Butch”) Graham of Camanche, IA; Cindy (Kenny) Lind of Camanche, IA; nephew Gary (Myra( Thomsen of Colorado Springs, CO and cousin Dorothy Andersen of Shelby, IA.
