Lydia Bertha Gizevich, daughter of John and Mary Matzat Redweik, was born September 2, 1915, in Chicago, Illinois. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Martini’s Lutheran Church in Chicago. She graduated from Lindblom School in 1933. Following graduation Lydia worked doing clerical work for the Chicago Mail Order Company and waitressing jobs at Sears and Robuck.
In 1937 Lydia was united in marriage to Charles Pollak who later died in 1944 due to an automobile accident. On November 22, 1947 Lydia married John Gizevich in Chicago and they made their home there with their three sons: Charles, LeRoy and Stanley. In 1993 John and Lydia moved to Denison, Iowa.
Lydia was an independent, kind woman and she loved quilting, crafts and reading. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and belonged to their Ladies Aid and quilting group. She also loved walking everywhere she went. Even in her late 90’s you could find her walking to Hy-Vee and carrying her groceries back to her apartment a block away.
On May 2, 2016 Lydia moved into the Manilla Manor and it was there that she died on March 12, 2018, having attained the age of 102 years, 6 months and 10 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Charles and John; son Charles Pollak; sisters: Mina Tomasewski and Lena Longhi; and great granddaughter Morgan Pollak.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons: LeRoy Pollak of Midlothian, Illinois and Stanley (Erika) Gizevich of Palos Hills, Illinois; daughter-in-law Marilyn Pollak of Denison, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
