Mabel Eliza Hansen was born May 3, 1911 in Jackson Township in Shelby County, Iowa to John and Helena (Hess) White. There was Mabel and her twin - Margaret, sister Evelyn along with twin brothers Nicholas and James. Their family lived on a farm in a neighborhood called "Copenhagen" because of all the many Danish families. Their family was of Danish and Irish heritage. She and her siblings attended country school at Jackson No. 9.
On December 4, 1946, Mabel was united in marriage to Thomas Hansen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church near Jacksonville, Iowa. To this union, one child, Gloria, was born. From the many experiences on her family�s farm, she was well prepared to take on the responsibilities of a farm wife and mother. In 1953, Mabel and Thomas moved to the farm place that has been in the Hansen family since 1874, and lived there until 1981, when they moved into Harlan, Iowa.
Mabel and Thomas were faithful and active members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she belonged to various circle groups, took part in bible studies, taught Sunday School and served in offices related to the church.
Mabel died Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of ninety-nine years, seven months and thirteen days. In addition to her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Evelyn, twin sister Margaret, and twin brothers James and Nicholas.
Mabel is survived by her daughter Gloria and her husband Larry West of Council Bluffs, Iowa; grandsons: Chad West of Council Bluffs and Jeremy West and his wife Annika and their daughter Vianne of Minneapolis, Minnesota; in-laws: Irma White, Hazel Hansen and Ed and Catherine Hansen, all of Harlan; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Pastor Ron Rasmussen and Rev. Annika Lister Stroope officiated the 1:00 PM funeral service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, on Monday, December 20, 2010. Serving as casket bearers were Chad West, John Christensen, Jon Hansen, John White, Derald Kumm, and Jeremy West. Interment was at the Jacksonville Cemetery.
