Madeline Marie Schomer was born on May 19, 1924 to Godfrey and Agnes (Micalski) Coenen on the family farm near Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School.
On 2, 1945, she was united in marriage to Charles Schomer at St. Boniface Catholic Church. There were four children born to them: Duane, Kathy, Richard, and Jerry.
Madeline enjoyed being a housewife, raising her children, and keeping busy with their activities. The couple lived in Westphalia for eight years before moving to Harlan in 1953.
For a short time, Madeline worked at the pork plant but returned to her chosen career of being a housewife. She was a fabulous cook and baker and no one ever left her home with an empty stomach. She never had a driver’s license and would walk everywhere she went. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor. Madeline continued to live in Harlan after her husband’s death in 1964, moving to Elm Crest Retirement Home in March of 2005.
It was there that she died on Monday, September 9, 2013, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months, and twenty-one days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, and sisters Eileen Schmitz and Rita Schulte.
She is survived by her children: Duane Schomer of Omaha, Nebraska, Kathy Anderson of Avoca, Iowa, Richard Schomer, and Jerry Schomer of Omaha; four grandchildren: Jason and Jeff Schomer, Michelle and her husband Eric Brooks of Harlan, and Melissa Jacobsen and her friend Jim Stanley of Avoca, Iowa; four great-grandchildren: Alysa and Matt Anderson and Jessica and Jordan Jacobsen; brothers: Melvin Coenen of Elk Horn, Iowa, Clarence Coenen on Harlan, Iowa, Virgil Coenen of Earling, Iowa, and Elroy Coenen of Denver, Colorado; sister Jan Rau of Harlan; other family members and friends.
