Marcella "Sally" Annette Schmitz was born on April 13, 1915, in Panama, Iowa, to Hubert and Anna (Mickels) Pauley. She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa, and confirmed at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. She attended country school in Panama.
On June 18, 1935, Sally was united in marriage to Nicholas Schmitz at St. Mary�s Catholic Church in Panama. Eleven children were born to this union. After their marriage, the couple farmed southeast of Panama. Two years later, they moved to farm south of Panama. In July of 1940, their crops were hailed out and they were only able to raise carrots.
They moved to a farm near Westphalia in 1945 and in 1950, purchased the farm from Nick�s father. Sally did custom decorating, papering, and painting for the people in the area. She worked at the Maidrite Caf� for several years. Later, she became a nurses aide at Myrtue Memorial Hospital. She then did in-home caregiving after retiring as a nurses aide.
She moved off the farm in 1994 and later into Westridge Apartments in Harlan. She became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in 2008.
Sally died on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, having attained the age of ninety-three years, one month, and fourteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandchild, and three great-grandchildren.
Sally is survived by her children: Larry Schmitz and his wife Vicki of Westphalia, Iowa, Cletus Schmitz and his wife Janice of Harlan, Norman Schmitz and his wife Gloria of Harlan, Roger Schmitz and his wife Judy of Westphalia, Iowa, Russ Schmitz and his significant other Renee Davis of Glenwood, Iowa, Marvin Schmitz and his wife Joan of Harlan, Linda and her husband Jim Bender of Lambertville, Michigan, Velma and her husband Bruce Arkfeld of Defiance, Iowa, Jim Schmitz and his wife Vicki of Omaha, Nebraska, Doris and her husband Lenny Schmitz of Harlan, and Nancy and her husband Tom DeRuby of Bellevue, Nebraska; forty-six grandchildren; eighty-eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her brother Andy Pauley and his wife Grace of Panama; her sister-in-law Veronica Pauley of Woodbine, Iowa; brother-in-law Jerome Croghan of Manning, Iowa; and sister-in-law Marge Croghan of Manning; nieces and nephews; other family members, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, May 31, 2008, with Rev. John Dorton celebrating the 10:30 AM service with concelebrants Rev. Bob Hoefler and Rev. Don Bruck. Serving as casket bearers were Cletus Schmitz, Norman Schmitz, Marvin Schmitz, Roger Schmitz, Jim Schmitz, and Russell Schmitz. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.
