Marcella Emma Watson was born on July 24, 1917 to Walter and Emma (Haas) Hesly on a farm in Pleasant Township. She attended the Minden Public Schools and graduated with the Class of 1934.
On February 19, 1938, Marcella was united in marriage to Monroe “Slim” Watson in Logan, Iowa. They welcomed a daughter, Gaylene Ann, to their family.
Marcella was a homemaker and business partner with her husband in their farming operation for over sixty years. After their daughter went off to college, Marcella began working outside the home as a bookkeeper for Merkert Feed and Grain and its subsequent owners, Robert Bane and Robert lagman.
She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed family gatherings and watching her grandchildren perform in their many activities. She enjoyed playing cards and going out for lunch with her friends.
Marcella passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of ninety-six years, one month, and seventeen days. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by her daughter Gay Searcy of Council Bluffs, Iowa; granddaughters Jill and her husband John Grundy of Gilbert, Arizona and Jane and her husband Gordon Parry of Omaha, Nebraska; four great-grandchildren: Morgan and Parker Grundy and Hannah and Hunter Parry; other family members and friends.
A private family graveside service will be held at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa. A celebration of life service will be held at the Shelby Methodist Church in Shelby, Iowa in late November and service times will be published at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Minden Fire Department or the Shelby Methodist Church.
