Margaret Louise Christensen was born on May 3, 1911 to John and Helena (Hess) White on the family farm near Jacksonville, Iowa. She attended Jackson Township No. 9. Since Margaret’s grandfather came from Ireland, the Irish influence was always apparent and she always had a four-leaf clover.

On March 8, 1933, she was united in marriage to Walter Christensen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Patricia, John, and Mary Ellen.

In addition to helping her husband farm, she worked as a seamstress. She taught Sunday School at Jacksonville for several years.

Margaret and Walter moved into Harlan in 1979 and transferred their church membership from Bethlehem Lutheran to Immanuel Lutheran at that time.

She remained in their home after Walter’s death in 1983, until she became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in March of 2009. It was there that she died on Saturday, December 4, 2010, having attained the age of ninety-nine years, seven months, and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sister Evelyn and twin brothers James and Nick.
