Margaret Johannsen was born on September 14, 1932 on the family farm outside of Hancock, IA to the late Harry and Ruby Jacobsen. She graduated from Hancock High School and married Don Johannsen on May 14, 1950 at the Hancock Methodist Church. Two children, Christie and Clay were born of this union. Margaret moved to Fort Leonard Wood, MO while Don attended basic training and moved back to Hancock when he deployed to Korea. They made their home in Avoca, loved watching their children grow up and enjoyed many special family vacations fishing and boating in Minnesota. Margaret was an avid sports fan of her own children, as well as her grandchildren and great grandchildren throughout the years. She loved to travel and was able to take many trips with Don in the truck seeing most of the United States and meeting a variety of people along their way. Margaret and Don also enjoyed fun road trips with her sister, Judy Petersen and husband Gary, to Canada, the western United States, Las Vegas and California. She enjoyed spending time with her family, dancing, playing cards, golfing and worked in the club house for a couple of seasons.
Margaret was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for many years. She was able to celebrate her 90th birthday just last week with family and friends. She was so thankful for all of the gifts, cards, phone calls, treats, visits and for all who helped celebrate her milestone birthday. Margaret loved her small town, her kids, grandkids and great grandchildren (she was everyone's "Grandma"), and many friends throughout her years.
Margaret passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at the age of 90 years and 6 days. She was preceded in death by her husband Don of 64 years, her parents Harry and Ruby Jacobsen, in-laws Grant and Hattie Johannsen; and brothers-in-law, Gary Petersen and Phil Updike.
Margaret is survived by her sister, Judy Petersen of Osceola, IA, sister-in-law Esther Updike of Eufaula, OK and cousin Mick McCauley of Yucca Valley, CA. She is survived by her daughter, Christie (Ron) Kawaler of Winnipeg, Manitoba; son Clay (Trudy) Johannsen of Avoca, IA; her grandchildren Daniel (Kelly) Kawaler, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Stephanie Wall, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Chase (Christie) Johannsen, Adel, IA; and Cole (Rachel) Johannsen, Glenwood, IA. She also leaves to morn her passing, seven great grandchildren she adored, Olivia, Ian, Amy, Katie, Adalynn, Peyton and Palmer.
