Margaret Marie Martin was born on February 12, 1921 in Glendale, California to Edward and Gladys (Benson) Metters. She graduated from Glendale High School in California with the Class of 1939. She attended technical school to become an X-Ray technologist and began working in California.
Margaret met Kenneth Martin in Oakland, Iowa and the two were united in marriage on May 19, 1946 in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Hancock, Iowa and three children were born to this union: Richard, Phyllis, and John. She began working at the Lutheran Hospital in Omaha before working as a X-Ray tech at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan where she would eventually retire.
Margaret loved to attend the opera in Los Angeles, as well as taking her children to the Joslyn Art Museum. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting afghans, clothing, and accessories for numerous new babies. She was involved in the Nishna Valley China Painter’s Club and made many beautiful pieces of art. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She was a lifelong member of the Hancock United Methodist Church where she was active in the choir, directed the little chair choir, volunteered as a Sunday School teacher and youth group leader, and was a member of the Rebecca Group.
She enjoyed traveling, one of her most memorable trips being to Ireland and Norway with Kenneth to visit Terje Froystein, an America Field Service student from Norway that lived with them in 1967 and who was considered part of the family from then on. She was a city gal at heart but remained on the farm in Hancock until two years ago when she and Kenneth moved to Harmony Court in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Here she made many new friends and attended Bible Study group.
Margaret died on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs with her husband of 67 years at her side. She had attained the age of 92 years, 10 months, and 9 days. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son Richard, and her brother Edward Metters. She is survived by her husband Kenneth Martin of Hancock, Iowa; a daughter Phyllis Owen of Lincoln, Nebraska, a son John Martin and his wife Kathy of Carrollton, Texas, and A.F.S. student Terje Froystein and his wife Aud of Oslo, Norway; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Neva Metters of Dallas, Texas; brother-in-law Dean Martin and his wife Dorothy of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister-in-law Twyla Martin of Ida Grove, Iowa; seven nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made out to the Hancock United Methodist Church in Hancock, Iowa.
