Margaret Ann Plumb was born on May 6, 1940 to Ralph and Vera (Cutler) Laver in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She attended country schools through the seventh grade, graduating from Irwin High School with the Class of 1958. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa for two years. She taught second grade in Jefferson, Iowa, for one year and in Harlan for one year.
On June 24, 1961, she was united in marriage to Don Plumb at the Methodist Church in Irwin. There were three children born to them: Deanne, Dave, and Jason. She became a homemaker and secretary for Plumb Hybrids. She was known to be a very good cook and kept the farm workers and family happy with her baking skills for many years.
Margaret loved pets and always had to have a dog! She helped her kids raise Shelties for 4H projects. She had a love for horses and the Plumb’s had several over the years. She had a talent for helping sick animals get back to good health…piglets, kittens, and even birds. Her love of animals was not limited to her home. She loved taking her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other children to visit the animals at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.
She kept busy volunteering too. Her children attended Shelby-Tennant and she was known to many as a fun band parent. This comes from other parents AND the students. She enjoyed her time in the Tennant Methodist Church basement…helping with many, many dinners. She spent time as a leader for the Lincoln Bluebirds 4H Club and was able to volunteer at the hospital gift shop for a brief stint.
After moving to Harlan in 1995, she was able to help with various activities in the Harlan Methodist Church until her health prevented her from doing so. It really bothered her to have to give up so many of the things she enjoyed due to her health issues.
Another joy of hers was attending auctions…especially winning the bid (with several bidders). She loved spending time with her grandchildren - baking, playing games, taking them places…and shopping for them. Her time traveling with Don around the United States brought them special memories over the years. Their time in the winters in their Arizona home was enjoyable…getting away from cold, snowy Iowa winters and spending time with new friends in Mesa. (However, she was always ready to get back to Iowa).
Margaret died at Elm Crest Retirement Home on Thursday, November 26, 2015 having attained the age of seventy-five years, six months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-four years Don Plumb of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Deanne and her husband Jim Stuart of Ames, Iowa; sons Dave Plumb and his wife Jean of Waukee, Iowa and Jason Plumb of Harlan, Iowa; four grandchildren: Zach and Britney Stuart and Kelsey and Karley Plumb; mother Vera Laver of Elk Horn, Iowa; sister Nancy Laver and her friend Tim Grimsley of Avoca, Iowa; brothers: Leslie Laver of Aurora, Oregon, Jim Laver and his wife Eva of Harlan, Iowa, Lynn Laver and his wife Norma of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Randy Laver and his wife Mary of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Gene Laver and his wife Shauna of Harlan; other family members and friends.
