Margene J. Meeves was born on a farm in Ida County, Iowa, March 2, 1938, the daughter of Clarence and Alvena Moss Johnson. She was received into God’s Kingdom through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in infancy and confirmed in her Christian Faith April 6, 1952, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Margene was raised on the farm and received her early education in the local rural schools before graduating from Ida Grove High School with the class of 1957. On July 7, 1957, Margene was united in marriage with Robert Meeves at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa. They made their home in Ida Grove and were blessed with three children, Terry, Jeanine and Travis and later, those joining the family were Neal, Cody and Kyle. They later moved to their farm at the southeast edge of Ida Grove where Bob and Margene were loving parents and, for over 40 years, they lovingly cared for nearly 100 foster children. Through the years, in addition to her busy home life, Margene was employed by Midwest Industries cooking at the Chalet, drove the transit bus transporting pre-school children and for five years managed Albertsen’s Flower Boutique in Ida Grove. Robert died April 23, 2004, and in 2005, Margene accepted on their behalf the Angel in Adoption Award in Washington, DC. In her spare time Margene enjoyed playing cards having been a member of bridge club and card club for 40 years, and dancing and listening to polka music is something they enjoyed together. She will be remembered by many for her great talent of baking and decorating cakes and other baked goods for many weddings and other life celebrations. She and Bob loved keeping the grandchildren for the entire summers on their farm creating memories for them to last a lifetime. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Due to failing health, following Bob’s death, Margene resided at Char-Mac in Holstein before moving to Harlan, Iowa, to be near her daughter Jeanine. Margene died Thursday afternoon, December 13, 2012, at Elm Crest Retirement Center in Harlan, Iowa, having been blessed with 74 years, 9 months and 10 days. Including her parents, Clarence and Alvena Johnson, and her husband, Robert Meeves, Margene was also preceded in death by two brothers: Duane and Donald Johnson; two sisters: Elaine Schuett and Eloise Kastner; and one niece, Linda Pastore. Those remaining to cherish her memory include six children: Terry Meeves and Joy of Dalhart, Texas, Jeanine and husband, John Good of Harlan, Iowa, Travis Meeves and wife, Lisa of Des Moines, Iowa, Neal Watkins and wife, Angie of Ida Grove, Iowa, Cody Davis of Harlan, Iowa and Kyle Parker of Ida Grove, Iowa; 9 grandchildren: Dillon, Lindsay, Jade, Jared, Jordan, Garrett, Grace, Brady and Brogan; 4 great grandchildren: Kadence, Christian, Kaelyn and Kessler; one brother: Ronald Johnson and wife Patsy of Calumet, Iowa; three sisters-in-law: Shirley Johnson of Ida Grove, Iowa, Linda Johnson of Russell, Iowa and Dorla Schuett of Ida Grove, Iowa, other relatives and friends.
