Marian Kathrine Remmes, daughter of Bernard and Mary (Maystadt) Olberding. was born July 14, 1928, at the Carroll Hospital, in Carroll, Iowa. She spent her time growing with three brothers and four sisters at Boyer, Westside, Denison, and Defiance, where she also attended grade school. Marian graduated from Manilla High School in 1946. She attended Mercy School of Nursing in Council Bluffs, Iowa and graduated in 1949.
Her father Bernard Joseph Olberding passed away in 1941 and her mother, Mary E. Olberding, purchased a café in Manilla, Iowa.
She married Tom Remmes April 1, 1951, and to that union four children were born: Michelle in 1953, Bernard (Bernie) in 1954, Mary Jane in 1956, and Richard in 1961.
She was employed as an R.N. in Kansas, Illinois, and Iowa. She attended Cook County School of Nursing for a post graduate class in obstetrics in Chicago. She was later nursing supervisor in Sioux City from 1950 - 1951. She was employed as an R.N. at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa for twenty-five years, until her retirement in 1989. She attended the writer's workshop in Iowa City in 1981 and pursued writing during her retirement.
For over 8 years Marian had the privilege of having the first graders of St. Rose of Lima in Denison, Iowa and St. Cecilia School in Ames, Iowa read to her weekly during the school year, which she treasured.
Marian passed away on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 2 months, and 15 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Mary Olberding; brother Paul Olberding; sisters Phyllis Kroll and Virginia Sievertson; brother Jack Olberding; brother Bennie Olberding; and sister Margaret McKibben.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Michelle Valdez of Bakersfield, California; Bernard (Gina) Remmes of Houston, Texas; Mary Long (Bob) of Ames, Iowa; Richard (Lanlan) Remmes of Lake Forest, California; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and sister Alice Edwards of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
