Mariann Kathryn Nielsen was born on March 28, 1931 in Union Township. She was raised by her foster parents, Andrew and Tina Johnson from Avoca, Iowa. She attended Avoca School and graduated with the class of 1950.
She was working at the Wedgewood Café in Avoca when she met the love of her life, Leo. They were married on November 14, 1951 in Harvey, Illinois. Leo and Mariann were blessed with three children; Calvin, Carrie, and Colleen. They also raised Leo's daughter, Connie. Mariann was a loving and devoted mother and housewife. She was baptized at the Altamont Baptist Church where she remained a lifelong member.
She loved to bake and cook. She enjoyed sharing her goodies with others. Her specialties were cinnamon rolls and pies. She enjoyed sewing and made quilts for all her children and grandchildren. Throughout her life she enjoyed traveling with Leo to many different places. She was an avid sports fan but especially loved the Iowa Hawkeyes. She watched every football and basketball game she possibly could while snuggled up in her Hawkeye blanket. In February of 2017 she became a resident at Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn, Iowa.
She passed away on March 10, 2024 at the age of 92 years, 11 months and 10 days. Mariann was preceded in death by her husband Leo. Survivors include her children Calvin and his wife Diane Nielsen of Harlan, Iowa; Carrie and her husband, Gerry Greve of Elk Horn, Iowa; Colleen and her husband, Richard Cox of Omaha, Nebraska; and Connie and her husband, David Clark of Dexter, Iowa; seven grandchildren; Doug Greve of Iowa City; Kevin Greve and his wife Amanda of Elk Horn, Iowa; Stephanie Donner and her husband, Mike of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Amanda Klabunde and her husband, Brett of Omaha, Nebraska; Allison Cox of Omaha, Nebraska; Amy Urquhart of Boone, Iowa; and Becca Kent and her husband, Mike of Dexter, Iowa; 14 great grandchildren: Madelyn, Andrew, Evan, Jesse, Sophie, Kasey, Kipton, Parker, Paxton, Peyson, Prescott, Elizabeth, Cody, Madison; many step-grandchildren and great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
